Braces and Tooth Decay

You don’t need a magnifying glass to see all the places on your metal braces where food and plaque can get trapped. All those brackets and wires seem tailor-made for snagging debris. At Henry Advanced Orthodontics in St. Augustine, we want to remind you that the risk of tooth decay runs high when you’re wearing braces.

It doesn’t seem fair, does it? You’re already enduring metal braces. Even with the knowledge that you’ll be rewarded with straight teeth and a fabulous smile, being at a higher risk for cavities is like some kind of double jeopardy.

But that, unfortunately, is the way it is. Your daily dental care routine has to be extra good, but we’ll get to that in a moment. First, we want to remind you that you’ll be better off avoiding certain foods and beverages, as much as is possible.

Acidic¬† foods and drinks can damage tooth enamel. Sugary stuff can lead to tooth decay even without braces, of course, and you’re always better off avoiding them. Starchy foods like potato chips can cause problems when you wear braces, because of the remains that get stuck in them.

You should also stay away from foods like nuts and hard cookies, while things like apples and carrots should be cut into small, bite-sized pieces. That will reduce the stress on your braces, and minimize its tendency to stick to them.

And above all: stay away from sticky stuff like toffee, caramel, and fruit bars. Gum-chewing, unfortunately, is also taboo.

Now, as for taking care of your teeth while wearing braces: you need to go that extra mile. Remember, it’s not just your teeth and gums, but the brackets and wires themselves, that need to be thoroughly cleaned.

  • Use fluoridated toothpaste and a soft brush
  • Brush after every meal
  • If you’ve got elastics, remove them when brushing
  • Ten seconds per tooth, with emphasis on the braces
  • Brush inside and outside surfaces of the teeth
  • Rinse thoroughly after brushing
  • A water flosser is an excellent addition to your arsenal
