Clear braces have emerged as an excellent alternative to traditional metal braces. Properly called aligners, clear braces like those available from Henry Advanced Orthodontics in St. Augustine have distinct advantages over metal, not the least of which is that they are removeable.
The fact that they are removeable, however, is one of their drawbacks. Before any patient is fitted for clear braces, we must determine whether the patient is going to be compliant.
For the best results, aligners should be worn for at least twenty-two hours a day. That means they need to be worn overnight. And it means that they should go right back in place after brushing and flossing, or when a meal is over. That can be an issue for some patients, especially teenagers.
There are other things to consider too, when determining whether one of our patients is a good candidate for clear braces:
- Is there good oral health? The patient must have no unfilled cavities, infections, or gum disease.
- Only mild to moderate straitening needed. Clear braces are most effective in less-severe cases of misalignment. The more crooked teeth are, the more likely other treatment will be required. On the bright side, this is slowly changing: clear braces are used more and more in complex cases.
- No tobacco. Need another reason to kick the habit? Smoking interferes with the functioning of clear braces.
For most of our patients at Henry Advanced Orthodontics in St. Augustine, clear braces are suitable. We provide Invisalign clear braces for adults and teenagers. To see if they’re right for you, call us to schedule a consultation.
